Biography of an EA82T Cylinder Head
After looking into the Vortex Hi-Rise intake (would love to cut one of those up too) I Decided to cut a set of Gen2 heads 'in half' to get a clue as to where the weak parts were and where they can be improved, port flow wise...here are the photos:
They really do have quite extensive cooling around the IN ports, if only the EXH/IN ports were seperated like these:
(This photo also shows the area behind where the 'triangle' shaped water jacket in the block meets the head, they can be drilled here and allow coolant flow directly into the head)
Really not much cooling down the bottom end of these heads at all, water jackets don't extend past the siamese exhaust merge:
This one shows the bulge where the 'D' section meets the 'O' section:

Was it just cracks, or were they leaking?

They is no good now, other than well documented presentation. I have a set to go on my engine soon, got them checked out by head shop . They say they are OK, even though they have the exhaust port leaking into combustion chamber - crack between both valves. I sorta don't like relying on this condition too much myself, so it is all experimentation.
Nice pics and thanks fer goin to the effort to share Neville

great pics! thanks for the effort...
i look forward to knowing more about the head problems. both sets of heads i've had have had a coolant leak coming out of the driver side, from the top front head stud coming out of the small bolt hole that goes in to it from the top (almost below the thermostat if you're looking at it on a complete engine.

I gave my engine builder a pair of cooked EA82T heads to cut up before he ported mine . I asked several times if he'd cut them up and he hadn't - I don't know why . If he had I'm sure he could have done a bit more on those HLA bosses .
Those "outlet bulges" were mostly removed on mine to improve exhaust flow .
Cheers A .
Sweating on that computer Neville , cheers A .
